The Role

The role of Senior Data Engineer belongs to the Application Development team in the Finance, Infrastructure and Digital Technology directorate. We have 5 office campuses across the state and this role will be based at our West Leederville office.

 

We are seeking 2 full-time ongoing Senior Data Engineers commencing in late March 2026.

 

The Senior Data Engineer is responsible for technical leadership of cloud data platforms, leading the design and build of strategic data products, as well as leading internal consultancy activities to enable business users and analysts to obtain valuable data insights.

 

The Primary accountabilities of this role include but and not limited to:

 

  • Provide leadership in designing, building and maintaining existing ETL frameworks, cloud data platform components, working with Azure SQL, Databricks and Azure Data Factory. 
  • Lead the build and maintenance of strategic data products which conform to CEWA’s business and non-functional requirements, using Power BI and other front-end technologies. 
  • Ensure Human-Centered Design tools & skills are used to ensure effective UX and high-quality UI in data products, using Figma and other design tools. 
  • Lead various internal consultancy services to business unit-based Business Intelligence Analyst, Business Analysts and other business users to facilitate data access, data literacy, understanding of technical tools and processes, to support business self-service.  
  • Lead the design, implementation and maintenance of dimensional data models using Kimball methodologies (Star Schema) to ensure high performance and consistency for analytics products. 
  • Perform complex data analysis and reporting using SQL, DAX, Python, Power BI and other technologies. 
  • Ensure automated tests are implemented as part of all data product builds. 
  • Provide leadership in utilising appropriate AI and ML tools and processes during the SDLC and within product features. 
  • Ensure the team delivers a suitable level of documentation, including Data Definitions, Product & Process Descriptions, Support Wikis, etc. 
  • Ensure a high Cybersecurity focus in all stages of the SDLC.

Selection Criteria

 

A.        ESSENTIAL: 

  1. Prepared to support the Catholic ethos in the performance of their duties.  
  1. Experience in a technical leadership role, in a collaborative and trust-based team environment. 
  1. 7+ years of experience working as a Data Engineer or Business Intelligent Specialist, with Databricks or equivalent technologies. 
  1. 7+ years developing Business Intelligence reports and dashboards in Power BI. 
  1. Strong programming skills and technical experience for data manipulation and management using PySpark, T/SQL and DAX or equivalent. 
  1. Strong understanding of data modelling patterns. 
  1. Strong UX and UI skills with proven ability to harness the full functionality of Power BI. 
  1. Experience optimising Azure/Power BI data solutions for performance.
